Senate Democrats Hold Up Funding for Comprehensive Health Care Providers Because Planned Parenthood and Abortion Lobby Bankroll their Campaigns

Washington, D.C. – The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) offered the following comment in response to Senate Democrats’ playing politics over Zika funding.

“Senate Democrats are putting more women and children at risk for Zika by blocking aid funding in order to secure a bigger handout for Planned Parenthood. They are the nation’s largest abortion business and already the recipient of more than half a billion in taxpayer funds each year,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Planned Parenthood and their allies are inciting panic and using this moment to promote abortion rather than promoting what’s best for women and children. They are ill-equipped to respond to the threats facing pregnant women and babies infected with the virus, yet Senate Democrats are holding up funding for comprehensive health care providers. Why?  Because Planned Parenthood and the abortion lobby bankroll their campaigns.”

In Puerto Rico, 20 community health centers served more than 300,000 people last year, compared to 8,000 people served at the island’s Planned Parenthood affiliate. By their own admission, Planned Parenthood’s Puerto Rico affiliates have no specific plan to combat Zika other than to offer contraception – a non-issue in the proposed spending bill. Nationwide, there are 20 times more community health centers than there are Planned Parenthood centers. These comprehensive health care clinics already serve nearly eight times the number of people Planned Parenthood does and do not offer or push abortion on-demand.

“Planned Parenthood and NARAL want to eliminate Zika by eliminating its victims. With what other illness do we end the lives of the afflicted, rather than try to heal them? Adult victims, child victims, and unborn victims of the Zika virus deserve the same standard of care.” Dannenfelser concluded.

Susan B. Anthony List and its Political Action Committees, the SBA List Candidate Fund and Women Speak Out PAC, spent $16.71 million in the 2014 election cycle to defeat pro-abortion incumbents and elect pro-life candidates to federal and statewide office. The SBA List is dedicated to pursuing policies and electing candidates who will reduce and ultimately end abortion. To that end, the SBA List emphasizes the education, promotion, mobilization, and election of pro-life women. The SBA List is a network of more than 465,000 pro-life Americans nationwide.
